Destination Earth
Our planet's digital twin

DestinE and the role of ECMWF

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is one of three Entrusted Entities delivering Destination Earth (DestinE), the ambitious initiative of the European Union to create a digital twin or replica of the Earth system, together with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), under the leadership of DG CNECT.

ECMWF, building on nearly five decades of progress in numerical weather prediction, Earth system observations and high-performance computing, is responsible for developing the first two high-priority digital twins, on Weather-Induced Extremes and Climate Change Adaptation, as well as the Digital Twin Engine, enhancing the EU’s digital capabilities and supporting adaptation strategies to meet the challenges of climate change and extreme weather events.

USE CASES

Use Cases by ECMWF

With dedicated "Use Cases" in the frame of Destination Earth, ECMWF ensures that the digital twins are built taking into account the gaps in information needs of different users for different impact sector areas.
